Yuletide competition & a new year
Hitting the road this afternoon for a ballroom competition not too far from home. It’s a kind of small-scale, fun affair and I’m looking forward to dancing in it tomorrow. Doing my favorite activity on the last day of 2010 seems a particularly apt wrap-up for the journey of discovery I’ve been enjoying. When it’s time for a New Year sip of champagne, I’ll be toasting...

Diary of a Mad Dancer (training log)
12/29/10 Wednesday
*Lesson with M.S. 1 1/2 hours. An extra session to prep American Smooth and Latin dances for the comp on Friday. It’s a small-scale comp, but a good opportunity for me to get back into the competition groove with M.S. We haven’t been in one together since August.
Must admit I can’t remember the last time I was out-and-about/awake for New Year’s Eve...

Diary of a Mad Dancer (training log)
12/28/10 Tuesday
*Practice with M.S. 2 hours. We have a comp on Friday, so we reviewed all Bronze & Silver American Smooth routines, except for Bronze Viennese Waltz, which almost dances itself. Eyes, eyes, eyes. Up, up, up. You’ve probably seen one of those creepy photos of a woman who has eyeballs painted on her eyelids so she looks at you when her eyes are open and when they are...

Diary of a Mad Dancer (training log)
12/27/10 Monday
*Practice: 1 hour. I was super excited that the roads were clear enough of snow for me to get to the dance studio for some practice time today. Warmed up with Latin Rumba and spent a good bit of time working on getting back and arm shapes right, while also articulating feet and clearly transferring weight on steps. Then on to Cha Cha, where for a change, I was able to get a...

Diary of a Mad Dancer (training log)
12/26/10 Sunday: Snow, snow and more snow, which my state is not well-equipped to clear from the roads! No dance studio for me today.
*Yoga: 50 minutes. Gaiam dvd: Warrior Yoga with Trudie Styler and James d’Silva. Very demanding practice. The strength required is right at the edge of what I can do. My legs were shaking afterward, so I decided to go ahead and have my recovery drink of...

The Beauty and Power of Rowing
“Rowing, indoors or outdoors, at any exercise level of intensity, requires a greater exercise expenditure than any other aerobic activity. Calories are burned in relation to the number of muscles used and the intensity and duration of the exercise. Rowing with a sliding seat uses a very large muscle mass since the upper, lower and trunk muscles are used vigorously.”
